Tag Your Friend, The Answer to Defining Friends on Facebook

UPDATE  (8/24/2007) : I see this post is getting a lot more attention lately.  Especially from people searching how to tag friends on facebook.  Clearly this is a feature people want.  See: http://www.allfacebook.com/2007/08/facebooks-killer-feature/

welcome_3 There have been a number of people lately questioning the way Facebook allows you to define your friends.  Since I have started using it, I have to agree.  Right now you have a limited list of options to choose from when you tell Facebook how you know somebody.  This is one of the few complaints I have seen so far regarding Facebook and the only one I have so far.

There is a simple solution that I am surprised has not been added to the site.  So surprised, I keep looking as I write this to make sure I am not missing something.  Why doesn’t Facebook allow you to tag your friends?  Then use those tags for separating your friends however you decide.  There is no list long enough to cover everybody’s take on how they know somebody.  Not only will this allow you to better state how you know a friend, it could be used to share items with a much more select group of friends that you have full control over.

Think about it, want to share an item just with your family? Pick the ‘Family’ tag.  Want to share a photo with just your close friends and family? Pick the ‘Close Friends’, then ‘Family’ tag.  There are a million different ways to know somebody.  The beauty of tagging is that we control how we classify something to us.  That is why it is so popular among blog posts, images, products etc.  Why not use it with people?

I have just begun to read the Facebook Developer’s Guide.  I wonder if this is a 3rd party possibility?
